FALLS
CHURCH, Va.—February 6, 2008—General Anthony C. Zinni (USMC Ret.) and
General Peter G. Schoomaker (USA Ret.) have joined the board of
managers of Global Linguist Solutions LLC (GLS).
GLS is a
DynCorp International and McNeil Technologies partnership. The U.S.
Army’s Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) awarded GLS a
contract to provide translator and interpreter services in Iraq. The
contract, with a total value of $4.6 billion over five years, was
protested by the incumbent and is under evaluation by the Army.
“The
addition of Tony Zinni and Pete Schoomaker will add valuable
experience, insight, and depth as GLS prepares to execute a critical
and complex contract for the United States Army in Iraq,” said Gen.
(Ret.) Barry McCaffrey, chairman of the GLS board of managers. “Our
board complements a team of experienced professionals who will be
prepared to deliver this essential service to the Army as soon as the
award is finalized.”
GLS will provide foreign-language
interpretation and translation services to the U.S. Army and other U.S.
government agencies supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, and will embed
Iraqi translators with U.S. forces. GLS will employ up to 6,000 locally
hired translators and up to 1,000 U. S. citizens with security
clearances who are native speakers of languages spoken in Iraq.
Zinni,
who holds the position of executive vice president of DynCorp
International, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in September 2000
after 39 years of service. He served as the commanding general of the
First Marine Expeditionary Force from 1994 to 1996, and as
commander-in-chief of the U.S. Central Command from 1997 to 2000. In
November 2001, former Secretary of State Colin Powell appointed him
senior adviser and U.S. envoy to the Middle East.
Schoomaker is
the immediate past chief of staff of the U.S. Army. He was called out
of retirement to take that position, which he held from 2003 until his
second retirement in April 2007. He served as the commanding general of
the Joint Special Operations Command from July 1994 to August 1996, and
led the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.,
through October 1997. Prior to assuming duties as the Army’s chief of
