IRVING, TEXAS (June 27, 2005) - It is with
great sadness that we announce the death of DynCorp International
Police Liaison Officer Deborah Dawn Klecker, an international
police liaison officer serving in Iraq with DynCorp International
under contract to the Department of State. She was killed June 27
by a roadside bomb.
Officer Klecker, 51, of Bend, Oregon, sustained massive injuries to
her pelvic area at about 1:10 pm local time Monday when an
improvised explosive device (IED) detonated about 10 meters from
the vehicle in which she was traveling. She was airlifted to the
combat support hospital in the International Zone, but was
pronounced dead at 2:22 pm. One U.S. soldier was wounded.
Officer Klecker was a 19-year police veteran who had been working
in Iraq for about two months as an international police liaison
officer. In that capacity, she mentored and advised Iraqi police
officers who had completed their initial training.
Officer Klecker began her law enforcement career in 1978 with the
Marion County (OR) Sheriff´s Department, and served as a deputy
sheriff. During her tenure with the department, she held
assignments in Patrol and Criminal Investigations. She also was an
instructor, teaching about crime scene investigations, crimes
against persons, and interviews and interrogations, and she served
as a mentor and adviser to recruits.
In 2001, Governor John Kitzhaber appointed her to the board of
directors of the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training
for the State of Oregon. She was reappointed by current Governor
Ted Kulongoski.
DynCorp International extends its deepest sympathies to Officer
Klecker´s family, and shares their grief in the loss of this
dedicated and courageous police officer.
